Picton and surrounds boasts 21 bushwalks spread over 55 kms of pristine natural wilderness. Incorporated as a major part of the World Heritage Listed Blue Mountains National Park, the Wollondilly area offers walks for the novice and experienced. Guide books with full track notes and maps are available from the Wollondilly Visitor Centre.

Dam Good Times

The five dams of Wollondilly provide a unique venue for a back to nature experience.

  • Bargo Village is home to Avon and Nepean Dams.
  • Wilton, on the journey to Wollongong, is home to Cordeaux Dam.
  • Historic Appin is a must for nature lovers. Places to visit include Cataract Dam, and Broughtons Pass for the photographers.
  • The mighty Warragamba Dam is the place to visit in the northern parts of Wollondilly.
Dam

All five dams are free to enter and provide excellent visitor facilities including BBQs, tables with shelter, playgrounds for the kids and of course visiting the Dam wall and the delightful walks along the way. Open 7 days 10am to 4 pm.

Parks

Wollondilly parks well worth visiting include:

Thirlmere Lakes National Park, five connected fresh water lakes ideal for canoeing, fishing, swimming and picnics. Facilities include BBQs, tables, toilets and bushwalking trails. Open 7 days 9am to 5 pm. PUF pass and Fishing license required ,non powered boats only.

Thirlmere Lakes

Burragorang Lookout, overlooking Nattai Valley and Lake Burragorang which feeds Warragamba Dam. This lookout is a spectacular site to visit and provides an ideal venue for groups to meet and enjoy a day in the bush. Facilities include BBQs, tables, playgrounds and toilets. Open 7 days, 9am to 5pm. PUF pass applies.

Bargo State Recreational Area, incorporating Little River. A 1km descent into the Nattai Valley from Boundary Rd, Buxton brings bushwalkers to the pretty Little River path. Get back to nature on foot. Please leave your vehicles in the car park and discover Little River on foot. Open 7 days 9 am to 5 pm. PUF pass applies.

Bargo State Recreational Area

Bents Basin State Recreational Area, on the Wollondilly border and only 20 mins from Penrith, Bents Basin SRA is a must visit site. 4 walking tracks plus all the facilities for a BBQ or picnic are available. Entry in Wollondilly is through Bents Basin Rd off Silverdale Rd, Wallacia. Swimming, canoeing and camping are popular activities, combined with a visit to Warragamba Dam make up the perfect short nature break. PUF pass applies.

Bents Basin State Recreational Area

Wirrimbirra Sanctuary at Bargo Village is a free to enter flora and fauna sanctuary offering a selection of native animals, bunk style accommodation, a nursery and the unique White Waratah Café. Primarily a Field Study Centre, Wirrimbirra prides itself on educating visitors to the unique and sensitive environment within Wollondilly.

Wirrimbirra Sanctuary

Bargo Dingo Sanctuary is a showcase for Australia's Native dog. Over 40 dingoes live at the Sanctuary and are purpose bred to supply NSW and WA zoos. All varieties of Dingo are on display and Sanctuary staff offer educational tours popular with students and adults alike. Entry costs are very reasonable with group discount available by arrangement. Gifts and memorabilia are also available from the gift shop. Open weekends and mid week by appointment.

Wirrimbirra and Bargo Dingo Sanctuaries are uniting in mid 2007 so ring before you come just to make sure the dingoes are ready for visitors in their new home.
