Thirlmere was named after a lake in The Lakes District, England. Today it is known for its Rail Heritage Centre and the nearby Thirlmere Lakes National Park. Each year, the town celebrates the traditional start of the steam season with the Thirlmere Festival of Steam on the first Sunday in March. Thirlmere Lakes offer swimming and canoeing as well as a very scenic location. These are among the last undisturbed freshwater lakes in the Sydney region and have a unique marine life. You are asked to take care and consider the delicate ecological system. A cycleway links Thirlmere and Tahmoor.
